F5 acquires the popular web server NGINX

The global leader in multi-cloud application services, F5 Networks, has announced that it is acquiring NGINX. NGINX is a leader in open source application delivery. Both companies have signed a definitive agreement which will see F5 networks buying NGINX for roughly $670 million. Although the deal is subject to adjustments, F5 will be acquiring all the shares of NGINX under the terms of the deal.

With F5’s resources NGINX will receive a major facelift as the former’s security solutions and cloud-native innovations will benefit the latter’s load balancing technology. NGINX will also gain as F5 plans to use its global Salesforce, channel infrastructure and partner ecosystem to scale NGINX’s selling opportunities.

In a statement Francois Locoh-Donou, President and CEO of F5 Networks said: “By bringing F5’s world-class application security and rich application services portfolio for improving performance, availability, and management together with NGINX’s leading software application delivery and API management solutions, unparalleled credibility and brand recognition in the DevOps community, and massive open source user base, we bridge the divide between NetOps and DevOps with consistent application services across an enterprise’s multi-cloud environment.”

Open source is a big part of F5’s multi-cloud strategy and this acquisition will give a major boost for the company’s capability to accelerate product integrations with leading open source projects.
