Qualcomm, Panasonic and Ford come together to set up C-V2X Communications

The tech giants Qualcomm, Panasonic and Ford have joined forces to set up smart communications in the new C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) project in Colorado. It’s an extension to the collaboration between Colorado Department of Transportation and Panasonic to apply vehicle technology in the state of Colorado. The project aims for the automotive transport to talk to the smart objects on the street while on the move, to enhance traffic efficiency and safety.

The technology can assist Advanced Driver Assistant Sensors (ADAS), like cameras and LiDAR (Light Detection and Radar). This will pave way for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside Infrastructure (V2I) communications without the involvement of any cellular network or any subscription.

“Recent field test results show a significant range, reliability, and performance advantage of C-V2X direct communications, with more than twice the range and improved reliability compared to 802.11p radio technology,” said Qualcomm in their statement. The project is designed to be compatible with 5G globally which can be later integrated to LTE-based telematics unit for direct communications in C-V2X.

Deployment of the technology may happen in the next few months over the summer in Panasonic’s CityNOW Headquarters. Following which there will be trials held by the Colorado Department of Transportation in the I-70 Mountain Corridor, Colorado. It’s expected that C-V2X will be inducting itself into the world of IoT ecosystem very soon.
