Giant Food Stores, an American super market chain situated in Maryland, welcomes a new member to its family. It is none other than a robot, named Marty.

The robot has just one mission to achieve— to keep the passageway safe. Nicholas Bertram, president of Giant Food Stores said, “Bringing robotics and A.I. from a research lab to the sales floor has been a very exciting journey, and we were thrilled by the customer response in our pilot stores.”

Marty will have a message written on its back “This store is monitored by Marty for your safety. Marty is an autonomous robot that uses image capturing technology to report spills, debris, and other potential hazards to store employees to improve your shopping experience.”

Marty will be present in all Giant Food Stores 172 locations covering West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. All stores are expected to get Marty in the next six months.

Marty is not responsible for cleaning— it will still be done by human employees. His job will be to make the path safe to all the customers and check if there are any out-of-stock items.

Walmart also revealed that it has plans of deploying floor-scrubbing robots in some of its stores. The robots are tested.
