Austin Lane Technologies, Inc.: Productivity Tools for Your Workforce

Modern businesses must implement tools, services, and solutions to improve workforce productivity and streamline their overall processes. In today’s digital workforce, the focus must be on improving productivity with the help of automation for organization’s to experience growth and to remain competitive in their industry. This automation adds value to the bottom-line results of a company, and Austin Lane Technologies, Inc. has been helping companies with exactly this since its inception in 1999.

We interviewed the President and CEO of Austin Lane, Austin Beaty, and asked him what it takes to survive in the technology industry and how to continue to evolve.

How did you get the idea or concept for the business?

Both sides of my family have been entrepreneurs for generations, so it has always been my dream to own my own business and provide a tool or service that improves people’s lives. Early in the start of my professional career, I met Rob Graber at Geac Computer Corp. in the 1990s. We quickly became friends and from there, began to develop a plan on how Palm IIIe devices could revolutionize the construction industry.

Together, we created a vision for the future and believed that we would save companies millions if not billions in real-time data reporting using mobile devices. We had a plan for a product that could record and track data remotely in the field and can push that data back to the home office and primary accounting system. We thought that Palm devices, which had a very simple user interface at the time, could be used by foremen and superintendents to track time, attendance, and productivity with ease. This is how Austin Lane and the creation of our product, ALMobile, began.

The company has only grown since then. We now serve a wide variety of industries, including the construction, environmental, industrial, oil & gas, energy, heavy highway, mining, and rail industries.

What was your mission at the outset and what is it today?

Our mission right from the beginning has been to help our clients excel by providing them with world-class support and innovative features and functionalities. We think of our clients as partners, as the development and design of our applications have been and continue to be heavily influenced by their feedback. After being in business for 20 years, we also pride ourselves on knowing what companies need before they need it, as we have seen too often what issues organizations in the construction industry experience without automating data collection. That’s why it’s been our goal to make the lives of our clients easier by streamlining their business processes and eliminating those problems they face every day.

What products/services do you offer?

At Austin Lane, our primary focus is business process improvement for our clients. We are a full-service software vendor that covers every aspect of field force automation. Our product, ALMobile, is an enterprise solution that tracks time, attendance, and productivity information. It seamlessly integrates with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to make collaboration between the home office and the field personnel easier.

Tell us about Austin Lane’s company culture.

At Austin Lane, one of our greatest assets is our people. We strive to be a company which has a culture that fosters creativity, open dialogues with management and works as a team to solve problems.

I think what the larger companies forget to do or add to their business strategy is investing back into their people. We try and do whatever we can for our employees, and all of our upper management subscribes to an open-door policy that encourages employees to freely share ideas.

How do you handle customer requests?

We provide our clients with an invaluable tool: the ALMobile Support Portal. This is where our clients and potential clients can find up-to-date information about support services, educational videos, and contact information for key Austin Lane team members. Clients can also look for training materials on our products, enter support tickets quickly, and choose the priority of their support request. We also cater to our client’s software customization requests by offering multiple ways in which clients can customize and/or affect product growth.

According to you, what is the next big thing in the technology marketplace?

I believe that the next big thing in technology is Artificial Intelligence, and it’s something that our clients have been requesting as well. Managing construction projects can be difficult, as there are a lot of data and factors to consider. Having AI capabilities implemented in your business processes can help reduce delays and other issues that occur in projects.

If you had a piece of advice for someone just starting their career, what would it be?

I would tell someone starting their career that they need to be ready and willing to put in a lot of work to get to where they want to go. Operating your own business is not just an 8-5 job. It requires faith, passion, and vision. If you are partnering with another individual(s) or an investment firm, it’s important to make sure you share the same business values as well. You must actively listen to others, be humble with your accomplishments, and remember that every person you come into contact with is an opportunity to learn. Lastly, apply the Golden Rule of ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.
