Cloudera: Caffeine for your Database

Cloudera: Caffeine for your Database

Cloudera was founded in 2008 by some of the brightest minds at Silicon Valley’s leading companies, including Google, Yahoo!, Oracle, and Facebook. The company’s founders hold at their core the belief that open source, open standards, and open markets are best. And that belief remains central to its values. Today, Cloudera has more than 1,600 employees — each with their own hoodie. Today, there are Cloudera offices in 24 countries around the globe, with its headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

Cloudera is all about contributing to the greater good. The company has been involved in some impressive initiatives including helping establish a cloud-based collection and analysis tool that identified suspected human trafficking networks and individuals. And in 2016, it became a part of President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI), where it’s committed to train 1,000 researchers in the latest big data technology.

And then there’s Cloudera Altus Analytic DB, which is the company’s star product. It is the first data warehouse cloud service to bring the warehouse to the data and going beyond SQL to deliver instant analytics to anyone quickly and reliably.

Work that Matters

There is a positive and passionate work environment at Cloudera. Working at Cloudera is made great with perks like generous time off policies, free and catered lunches based on office location, casual dress code, social gatherings, discount programs, and T-shirt enthusiasm! There is also the additional paid medical disability and child bonding leaves, family youth intern program, and Bring Your Child to Work Day.

And not to forget the gym reimbursement and Employee Assistance Program that form an integral part of Cloudera. When it comes to encouraging the employees, Cloudera offers volunteer time off policy, quarterly team building offsite, seminars, tuition reimbursement, Hackathons, and mentorship of interns. Having a global presence, Cloudera provides global wellness challenges, business travel insurance, and Redpoint global crisis management services for its employees.

One of the employees at Cloudera expresses, “Excellent talent pool, good perks, and clear outlook for the company. In spite of stiff competition, Cloudera is and will continue to be the market leader in the Big Data space. As a brand, Cloudera is worth the hype.”

Culture at Cloudera

“At Cloudera, our culture, our ethos, is centered on our values. We're here not only because we're experts at what we do, but also because we hold these values in common,” explains the CEO of Cloudera, Tom Reilly. At the core level, Cloudera is open and believes in transparency with each other, customers, partners, and the community. “We believe that open source, open standards, and open markets are best.”

Cloudera is open to ideas and receive help from others. It evaluates its successes and failures honestly and shares constructive feedback. The company is impatient for progress and contributes ideas while it tries to fix problems without being asked. “We're passionate about making an impact — in our company, marketplace, and community — and we're proud that our efforts help make the world a better place,” says the CEO.

There’s always a chance for employees to grow with Cloudera. “We invest in our people by trusting and empowering them. We believe in creating an environment that enables our employees to grow,” says believes Riley. The company takes responsibility for each other’s personal — as well as collective success. It enables fellow Clouderans to develop new skills and promote from within. Cloudera intends to harness the best thinking, and the best thinkers, on the planet and believes that greater diversity leads to greater ideas.

Data-driven Donations

Many not-for-profits strive to be data-driven but lack the resources to implement and drive these programs. This is where the company established Cloudera Cares. Cloudera Cares is committed to helping bridge these gaps for not-for-profits, from both a data and people standpoint. In 2014, Cloudera Cares partnered with DataKind, to help enable not-for-profits to drive their own data strategies and implementations of advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The company’s most recent joint partnership, announced in 2017, is with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Intel. Cloudera is running a hackathon series with the quest to bring children home.

Meet the Builder of Cloudera

Tom Riley is the CEO of Cloudera. He has a distinguished 30-year career in the enterprise software market. Prior to Cloudera, his most recent role was as vice president and general manager of enterprise security at HP. Previous to HP, Riley served as CEO of enterprise security company ArcSight, which HP acquired in 2010. He led ArcSight through a successful initial public offering and subsequent sale to HP. Before ArcSight, he was vice president of business information services for IBM, following the acquisition of Trigo Technologies Inc., a master data management (MDM) software company, where he had served as CEO. Riley currently serves as a Board Member for privately held Ombud Inc., ThreatStream Inc., and Cloudera. Riley graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

“With Cloudera, you get the best of both worlds — the fast pace, innovative world of a start-up, but with the funding and talent that allows the company to have a bigger impact on the next generation of data technology than most of the large legacy IT vendors.” — Cloudera employee

“We invest in our people by trusting and empowering them. We believe in creating an environment that enables our employees to grow.”
