CyberSecurity Simplified by ProStar Solutions

There are a number of risks we face today, especially in the world of cybersecurity. Sometimes, companies do not seriously consider these risks and it ultimately leads to a hack or data breach. We constantly keep listening and seeing business owners losing everything they worked so hard to build, all because of a data breach. This is where ProStar Solutions, Inc. comes in and has been simplifying cybersecurity since its establishment.

ProStar Solutions was founded in 1999 to help small and medium businesses in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada get the most out of their business technology. “Over the years we’ve consulted with more than 1,500 businesses relieving their technology worries so that they can concentrate on growing their businesses and realizing their goals,” says the CEO and founder, Delon Lukow.

A TRUE Story as told by Delon Lukow

Memorial Day Weekend 2007 - My wife and four young kids and I are heading north out of the scorching desert heat of Las Vegas towards the cool mountains of southern Utah. We are in our big SUV all loaded down pulling a 28-foot, 3-axle sleeper trailer with 4 ATV’s in the back and all kinds of other stuff crammed in everywhere. Driving along through the Virgin River Gorge there is a big mountain to my right that drops off and away from the road as I drive past.

Once clear of the mountain, a huge gust of wind comes up from the river below and it feels like King Kong picked up the back of the trailer and threw it over about 4 feet behind me. I instantly start swerving and have to counter-steer to try and remain in control. I reach down and grab the trailer brake…..nothing…..nothing.… “Why isn’t this thing working?”  I have no trailer breaks!!!! Everything goes silent. Not a sound. I’m completely focused on steering and then, IT happens. What? How is it that I’m seeing the air conditioner and the skylights on the roof of the trailer? The slick fiberglass on the side of the trailer has increased its momentum so it is now speeding up alongside me and pulling us around like a pair of Olympic ice skaters with their arms firmly locked together.

I’m leaning sideways as we spin a full 360 degrees and then another 180 degrees hitting both the center cement barrier and guard rail twice each before sliding to a grinding, shrieking halt facing south in the northbound lane of 1-15. I am now aware of the deafening yelling and screaming from the kids in the car. Suddenly, there is dead quiet and a long pause. My youngest son Chandler who is 4 yrs. old and strapped in his booster seat in the 3rd row yells out indignantly, “Way to go Dad, you ruined up the trailer!”

Simultaneous laughter erupts with relief as we consider his proclamation and marvel to ourselves and each other that we are alive and unscathed. A new panicked thought flashes into my mind and screams at me as I yell, “Everybody out! RUN!” I’m imagining an immediate explosion from the gas that is surely gushing from the two full 50 gallon gas tanks on the bottom of the trailer or the 4 ATV’s in the back or from the two 15 gallon propane tanks mounted on the front of the trailer. Amazingly, along the bottom of the trailer I see the fill spouts of both gas tanks have separated several inches but incredibly they are upright with no leaks because the trailer rolled over to the right and not the left.

There Are Only 3 Things You Need To Know

I just about killed my entire family! Why didn’t the trailer brake work? The trailer brake is a simple $79 part that mounts under the dash and is activated by sliding just the thumb lever which will apply only the brakes on the trailer thus keeping the vehicle and trailer in line for proper steering control. Think of walking a dog and pulling their leash tight. It took me about a week later to remember, I did not “set” the trailer brake.

  • There are things that we know we know
  • There are things that we know we don’t know
  • There are things that we don’t know we don’t know

In my case, I did not know driving down the road I had forgot to set my trailer brake. This trailer experience has been on my mind recently as CyberSecurity threats have been growing exponentially. There is a great deal of Cognitive Dissonance going on. “That won’t happen to me. I’m too small. Hackers go after the big guys just like you see on TV.” Those stories make the news precisely because of the large numbers of people affected but statistically it is the small businesses that are being hit at an exponential rate. Larger companies are able to absorb these hits. Far too many small businesses are not able to survive. And those stories rarely make the news.

Create a proactive posture to defend against hackers and CyberSecurity threats. A lot of this stuff is common sense and there are a number of things that don’t cost any money and only require a little amount of effort to implement or maintain. The key is awareness and focused intention. CyberSecurity isn’t just a widget you buy and cross off your to-do list. Protection from threats lies at the intersection of people, process, and technology. The most important of which and certainly the wild card in the bunch is people. Small Business is the substantial majority of GDP and commerce in our country and yet is at the greatest threat of current CyberSecurity attacks. Take Action!
