Evidence-based decision making is an integral part of healthcare. It involves combining the knowledge arising from one’s clinical expertise, patient preferences, and research evidence that lies within the availability of resources. And just like all decision making, evidence-based decision making in healthcare requires the researchers and doctors to choose from a discrete range of options.
As defined by Sackett, a pioneer of evidence-based healthcare, “Evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.”
The roots of evidence-based practice are, in fact, linked to evidence-based medicine. Luckily, the history of evidence-based medicine has been well documented which provides a basis for further studies. According to these documents, evidence-based medicine includes primitive experiments to test the effectiveness of practices such as bloodletting.
In 1996, a group of thought leaders, who realized the importance of evidence-based healthcare and healthcare quality improvement came together and established Zynx Health. The company was founded around a mission to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare.
The Founding Stone
“Our historical roots as a quality improvement innovator for a large healthcare system and as a pioneer in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of evidence-based care guidance solutions are integral to our culture that strives to improve patient outcomes and financial performance,” says Kevin Daly, the President of Zynx Health. “This foundation is exemplified by our employees, who represent the best talent and expertise across the intersection of content creation, technical delivery, and clinical adoption,” he adds.
Based in Los Angeles, the company serves over 1,900 hospitals and outpatient practices globally, though most are located in the US. As of 2012, Zynx Health products and services impact over 50% of hospital discharges in the US. As of 2004, Zynx Health became a subsidiary of Hearst Corporation.
Evidence-based at its Best
Today, after two decades, Zynx Health is a recognized leader in evidence-based clinical decision support and offers a suite of online solutions that help clinicians treat their patients based on the best available evidence from systematic research. The evidence-based clinical decision support system solutions are made available at the point of patient care through electronic health record (EHR) systems.
“At Zynx, our solutions make it easier to reach your quality and financial goals,” notes Daly. The company’s wide range of clinical, content, and technology resources enhance the care process by delivering vital information, tools, and processes to healthcare organizations across the entire care episode. Zynx Health helps in improving patient outcomes, financial performance, clinical engagement, and technology performance — all resulting in higher quality patient care and lower costs. The company’s solutions include ZynxAnalytics, ZynxCare, ZynxEvidence, Zynx Health, and ZynxOrder.
Designed to evaluate and optimize clinical content and processes, Knowledge Analyzer is an update and maintenance solution that maximizes the value of the client’s computerized provider order entry (CPOE) system and aligns the organization across desired clinical and financial goals. Knowledge Analyzer reduces variation and improves outcomes by validating clinical decision support (CDS) against current medical evidence, guidelines, and performance measures. The solution also boosts efficiencies with a workflow for clinicians to continuously refine care guidance, including order sets and plans of care.
ZynxCare evidence-based plans of care deliver cross-continuum care guidance that empowers nursing and interdisciplinary care teams to improve quality of care. Zynx Health’s fully customizable plans of care, developed by experienced nurses and allied health professionals and based on emerging healthcare evidence, enables the organization to standardize care, improve outcomes, and maximize performance under healthcare reform.
Tap into ZynxEvidence to access an online referential library of rigorously researched clinical evidence, national guidelines, and quality measures. By providing decision makers with an online resource full of clinical decision support (CDS), clients can improve clinical and financial outcomes. Clinical modules within ZynxEvidence highlight specific interventions that lead to optimal care while complying with quality measures, major regulatory initiatives, and accreditation programs, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, The Joint Commission, and American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Clinicians can access indisputable clinical intelligence on a variety of topics ranging from performance improvement to treatment planning to discharge considerations.
Zynx Healthcare Informatics Services addresses all aspects of care guidance deployment and optimization to accelerate time-to-value of any Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system content, including order sets and plans of care. A dedicated team of industry experts with more than 30 years of experience and with more than 1,450 successful implementations will handle the heavy lifting and use a proven methodology to manage any projects. Zynx Health has experience and strong relationships with all major electronic health records (EHRs), including Epic, Cerner, MEDITECH, and McKesson.
Leveraging unmatched evidence methodology, ZynxOrder provides an extensive library of actionable, evidence-based order sets and clinical decision support rules that improve inpatient outcomes by reducing risk, decision uncertainty, and practice variation. With a full suite of collaboration tools that bring together key stakeholders for quick feedback and consensus, the software as a service (SaaS)–based system expedites order set customization and implementation processes and offers comprehensive clinical and quality improvement for hospitals.
North York General Hospital, the first Canadian hospital to integrate current evidence into the clinician workflow, uses the order set solution ZynxOrder to improve patient care outcomes. Leveraging Zynx Health’s proven integration with Cerner Electronic Health Record (EHR), North York significantly streamlined the process of importing order sets into computerized provider order entry (CPOE) while using Zynx Health online collaboration tools to achieve consensus on order sets asynchronously and across disciplines. – Director of Medical Informatics, Jeremy Theal, MD.
Improving patient outcomes requires more than just up-to-date evidence. It’s about having the right evidence in an accessible format that fits naturally within clinician workflows. At Zynx Health, the company’s solutions drive performance by delivering vital information that has been proven to positively impact patient outcomes and that easily integrates into end-user workflows.
By standardizing content and reducing variation, Zynx Health helps healthcare organizations reduce penalties and elicit greater financial returns under recent US healthcare reform policies, including Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program (HAC), Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP). Fiscal prosperity under these mandatory pay-for-performance programs requires the highest quality of care. Zynx Health’s solutions and services take performance measures a step further by highlighting vital interventions that are tied to improved outcomes. This evidence provides a foundation that aligns with pay-for-performance initiatives and provides you the flexibility to continuously drive outcomes improvement and achieve peak clinical and financial performance.
To improve clinical and financial outcomes, evidence-based care guidance must be used consistently at the point of care. The company’s solutions deliver relevant content and workflows that drive consistent clinician adoption by cutting through the noise of overwhelming healthcare research. “We can quickly distinguish changes with the most impact on patient outcomes, and we build accountability by involving clinicians during all stages of clinical decision support (CDS) development and maintenance,” explains the President.
Zynx Health solutions complement the electronic health record (EHR), computerized provider order entry system, and clinical processes to improve the performance. Innovative approaches around content integration, clinical content validation, and single-system content maintenance streamline projects and maximize the value of healthcare technology and processes.
“At Zynx Health, we're passionate about providing healthcare professionals with vital information and processes that guide care decisions and reduce complexity across the entire patient journey,” notes Daly. The employees strive for bold innovation where forward thinking in meeting the needs of clients and colleagues are an integral part. “We strive to generate and infuse excitement for improving the lives of others and cultivate a fun and productive work atmosphere,” adds Daly.
Now, Zynx Health is part of Hearst Health. Across Hearst Health, everyone is unified in the mission to guide the most important moments of care across a person’s health journey. “Our companies are pioneers and leaders in their markets,” he boasts. The entire company is unequivocally committed to delivering the highest quality content, software, and services for its clients and the patients it serves.
