Google’s new Fit design is more relaxed with metrics and rings

Google rolls out a revamped Google Fit app for Android and for the Wear OS app. The new major change is the closing rings, just like in any other design including Apple. The new app with more relaxed metrics encourages users to complete two goals every day, “move minutes” and “heart points”.

While “move minutes” is tightly designed to track every single activity and not just simple steps – as walking might not be a suitable option for everyone – “heart points” is a little more abstract that encourages people to engage in activities that pump-up their heart rate. Heart points is a healthy addition that can be achieved by “simply picking up the pace when you’re walking,” illustrates Margaret Hollendoner, Senior Product Manager for Google Fit.

The Fit software estimates the numbers while vigorously attempting to use as many sensors as possible for tracking. Additionally, Fit can also work with health data captured by other compatible devices. The goals Google set-up in Fit, by working with AHA and WHO, are roughly 150 minutes of “moderate” activity (for move points) and 75 minutes of “vigorous” activity (for heart points) per week. Fit, however, will still show the basic step counts and estimated calories burned.

Hollendoner says that the new Fit app will even offer suggestions, like reminding you of those remaining minutes of exercise to hit a weekly goal. On its own, the new Fit seems extremely good, but this may not be ‘enough’ and Google may release new smartwatches later this year.
