Windows 10 Pro makes Enterprise entry

windows 10 pro makes enterprise entry

Microsoft has just announced its latest version of windows 10 Pro specifically made for the enterprise. The new Windows 10 Pro is tailor made for professional users that use high-end hardware to support mission-critical workloads.

Like rumors suggested, the new OS will feature Microsoft’s server-grade file system (the Resilient File System), support for persistent memory and faster file sharing with SMB Direct. On the hardware end, it has support high-end hardware with up to 4 CPUs and 6TB of memory when compared to the 2 CPUs and 2TB of memory supported by the regular Windows 10 Pro.

“Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is a high-end edition of Windows 10 Pro, comes with unique support for server grade PC hardware and is designed to meet demanding needs of mission critical and compute intensive workloads,” said Klaus Diaconu, Partner Group Program Manager of Windows & Devices Group. “Performance is a very important requirement in this new world of fast paced innovation and we will continue to invest on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations to enable Windows power users to maximize every aspect of their high-performance device.”

The focus with the new Pro is indeed on high-end hardware and for this edition of Windows; this also implies that it offers support for Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron processors. The party addition to the OS is the Resilient File System (ReFS). IT provides an extra level of data availability, resilience and fault-tolerance and can handle very large volumes and automatically repair errors when data on one of the backup drives gets corrupted.

With the workstation specific OS, users can now take their data and use SMB Direct to make it available to other users on their network. SMB direct files in the version enables fast file access with low latency that barely uses the local CPU, using the Remote Direct Memory Access capability. Although the price tag is yet to be confirmed, the Windows 10 Pro for workstations will be available for enterprises this fall as part of the fall creators update.
