Qualcomm releases new cellular chipset to enable IoT

Qualcomm has come out with the new Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem that is purpose-built for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The newest offering from Qualcomm is a revolutionary piece of chipset that brings together key innovations that are required to build cellular-enabled IoT products and services.

The chipset supports “global multimode LTE category M1 (eMTC) and NB2 (NB-IoT) as well as 2G/E-GPRS connectivity, application processing, geolocation, hardware-based security, support for cloud services and accompanying developer tools” according to Qualcomm. This will help the company’s product blend well with the ever-growing market of health monitors, smart city sensors, smart meters and a range of wearable trackers.

Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem is 70% more power efficient in comparison to its predecessor in idle mode. The modem is also 50% smaller and more cost effective than its predecessor too. The manufacturers will also be able to reuse software as the newest offering from the chipmaker is compatible with the company’s older LTE IoT solutions.

LTE IoT will play a crucial role in how 5G connects IoT in the coming times and this offering by Qualcomm will help expand the IoT ecosystem greatly. Vieri Vanghi, VP of Product Management, Qualcomm Europe Inc., said: “LTE IoT technologies are the foundation of how 5G will help connect the massive IoT, and we are making these technologies available to customers worldwide to help them build innovative solutions that can help transform industries and improve people’s lives.”
