Scientists launched the first ever robotic fish!

Its looks are similar to fish and it also swims like one, but it is not fish! Then what is it? Hang on! We will tell you…

It’s SoFi, the robotic fish. It is designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the robot has tender body that glides silently through the water which mimics the movements of fish.

This is the first project of such sort wherein the robot can resist the currents and pressures for an extended period of time.

“For us, this fish is magical,” said Daniela Rus, director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT, who led the work.

She added that this invention can someday help in unveiling all the mysteries from the underwater world which we all know little about.

SoFi is about a foot and a half long and weighs just 3.5 pounds. A hydraulic pump is fixed in its tail so that its tail will move from side to side permitting the robot to swim like a fish.

There is fish-eye lens and electronics including Linux PC fixed in robot’s head. Its time span to swim is around 40 minutes. The device has small battery similar to the one in smartphones.
