Intel is collaborating with Baidu for Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor

Intel is partnering with Chinese giant Baidu in an effort to develop the new Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor. The collaboration was announced at the Baidu Create AI developer conference in Beijing by Naveen Rao, Intel Corporate Vice President.

The partnership between the two companies will see them collaborate in hardware and as well as software designs of the new custom accelerator for training deep learning models swiftly.

Announcing the partnership Rao said: “The next few years will see an explosion in the complexity of AI models and the need for massive deep learning compute at scale. Intel and Baidu are focusing their decade-long collaboration on building radical new hardware, co-designed with enabling software that will evolve with this new reality – something we call ‘AI 2.0.’”

The collaboration between the two companies is not new as Intel has been helping Baidu by optimizing Baidu’s PaddlePaddle deep learning framework for Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. In addition, Intel and Baidu are also collaborating on MesaTEE which is a memory-safe function-as-a-service (FaaS) computing framework which is based on the Intel Software Guard Extensions technology. The latest collaboration between the two will help the companies train hardware and meet the latest of customer demands.
