Greener Hope Program Will Transform Nigeria’s Agriculture on Independence Day

Greener Hope is Nigeria's program for enhancing agricultural productivity and food security through youth farmers and modernizing agriculture practices for sustainable development.

To bring about a revolution in agriculture through modern equipment and also decrease post-harvest challenges, GHAPP exists in Nigeria's 64th year of independence. This program is a Federal Government and ministries of Agriculture and Food Security joint initiative with the aim of improving productivity and reducing manual labor in the farming sector.

In this regard, Origin Tech Group is well positioned to work with the government on this project which is designed to modernize agriculture in Nigeria and create a new paradigm of food security, wealth and employment generation. By taking the private sector approach, GHAPP is targeting the improvements of farmers’ earnings whilst reducing their movements to urban areas through provision of agricultural services in the outskirts.

Aspects of these initiatives are incorporating provision of high yielding seeds, extension services and improving facilities for the storage of farm produce. The initiative also targets youth farmers with plans to train 50,000 of them on modern farming practices and ensuring that they have the relevant implements. Tractor hailing services and creation of agribusiness jobs are other elements that are incorporated in order to promote sustainability.

According to Dr. Musa Olasupo, Director of the Greener Hope Initiative, there is a need to enhance food security in the light of many threats to it, including climatic variability and insecurity. This, he observed, was a forward-looking programme which invested in the country’s human resources for job and socio-economic development at the grassroots level.

Nigeria looks back at itself and hopes that GHAPP is a step on the road to reaching a sustainable agricultural future from where food production will shoot up and we will be self-sufficient.
