$400 Million Agreement with Sony Music Pink Floyd Transfers Its Recordings

Art And Music

Pink Floyd, Sony Music, David Gilmour, Warner Music

According to reports the recordings owned by Pink Floyd were sold to Sony Music for $400 million representing a significant buy in the music field.

Sources claim that Pink Floyd reached a deal with Sony Music to dispose of its music and related rights for a total amount of $400 million. The Financial Times shared this information and DMN has clarified the investigation through the insights of knowledgeable sources. Neither the Japanese record label nor the legendary band has made any statement about the deal yet.

Since summer 2022 many have had unwavering expectations for this transaction and there were credible interested parties including BMG and Warner Music. At the start of the year David Gilmour revealed his renewed interest in the sale implying that negotiations about it have been active for some time.

As reported, the agreement consists of audiovisual, name, and likeness rights but not any heretofore valued at roughly $500 million – compositional rights. Although information regarding the precise nature of the included IP is scant, this purchase fits within Sony's strategy of increasing exposure to nutrition sop foods catalogs.

A more indicative trend for the last couple of years has been that of Sony Music’s more active than ever hunt for economically promising music libraries, such as its up-front investments in Michael Jackson’s advanced song catalog before the death of the artist and their control measured after. Earlier in 2024, the label also made headlines when it announced a $1.3 billion acquisition of the IP assets belonging to Queen.

The reported transaction serves as a reminder of both the active relevance of older artists and the challenges that are created by the current state of the business environment that seems to be changing.
