Wimbledon is teaming up with IBM to introduce artificial intelligence-powered commentary to its coverage in 2023.
For the captions and audio commentary in its online highlights videos, the All England Club has teamed up with IBM for their AI platform.
The service will feature on the official Wimbledon website and app and will be separate from the BBC’s coverage for the July 3–16, 2023 tournament. It will utilize IBM’s watsonx AI platform, which has been educated in the “unique language of tennis” with the aid of the All England Club. The club already utilizes IBM’s AI technology to provide features like its player power index, which analyzes player performance.
2023's Wimbledon coverage will feature AI-enabled player assessments of single draws and analyze how favorable a player’s path to the Grand Slam's final could be.
IBM said that this new insight would help tennis fans uncover anomalies and potential surprises in the singles draw that would not be apparent by viewing only the players’ rankings.
According to IBM, the action was a step towards creating AI commentary on entire matches. The European Broadcasting Union announced in June 2023 that the commentary for the European Athletics Championships would be provided by Hannah England's cloned voice. For commentary on the European Athletics YouTube channel, the English voice will mimic the content of the event's live blog.
More than ten years ago, Watson, the name IBM gave to its collection of AI tools, made headlines for participating in and winning a round of the American game show Jeopardy!, in which contestants respond to trivia questions in unusual ways.
