Audi’s 2024 vehicle lineup to have 5G network connectivity

The German automaker announced that select models of Audi vehicles, beginning in 2024, can connect to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network.

The improved connectivity will mean better software performance, enhanced navigation, and faster video and music streaming capabilities.

Drivers will likely need to pay a subscription fee to access Audi’s 5G in-car services. While Audi didn’t announce how much a 5G subscription fee would cost, the existing Function On-demand plan with 4G LTE in-car navigation and Wi-Fi is $849 per year.

The partnership aims to bring faster network speeds to new vehicles models with more advanced software demands than analog cars of the past. It also comes as automakers explore new technologies, like, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, that could enhance safety and drive quality in the future.

The U.S. is stirring closer to a connected car future that major automakers like Audi, Volvo, BMW, and Ford have pushed for. According to an eMarketer report, almost 60% of American drivers drove a connected vehicle in 2021, and the number of connected cars is projected to grow to more than 70% by 2025.

Verizon and Audi say the plan is to bring 5G Ultra-Wideband technology to the automaker’s vehicle lineup, starting with the model year 2024. The improved connectivity will lead the way for new features, such as new driver-assistance features, augmented mobile services, and connectivity-enabled innovations for the automated future of driving.
