Toyota Daihatsu cease shipping all models safety scandal

As the scandal surrounding its manipulation of safety tests spreads far beyond the six models that have been identified thus far, Toyota subsidiary  Daihatsu Motor intends to cease shipping all cars made in Japan and abroad.

Soichiro Okudaira, the president of Daihatsu, visited the transport ministry in Tokyo on Wednesday to deliver the results of an independent panel's assessment. In the afternoon, the company is scheduled to host a press conference to discuss the results and its future production plans.

Production lines will be put on hold by the automaker until it has fixed flaws in its safety procedures.

One of the leading manufacturers of kei minicars is Toyota Motor's fully owned subsidiary. An automaker of this caliber rarely halts any sizable amount of production.

In April, Daihatsu declared that it had discovered errors in the side-impact safety testing of four models intended for international markets, and it formed an impartial committee to investigate the matter.

The business said in May that it had discovered issues with the testing of the Toyota Raize, which Daihatsu manufactures for its parent firm, and the Rocky Sport utility vehicle. Rocky and Raize production has already been put on hold.

It is thought that during the course of the nearly eight-month independent investigation, inaccurate emissions and other environmental data were discovered.

In fiscal 2022, Daihatsu produced more than 1.7 million automobiles globally. Roughly 50% were produced in Osaka and Shiga prefectures in Japan. When it comes to kei automobiles, Daihatsu and rival Suzuki Motor rule the market with about 30% of the total.
