Beginning January 1, 2025, Cisco will no longer sell LoRaWAN equipment, but active LoRaWAN customers with active contracts will continue to receive support through December 31, 2029.
Cisco Systems has announced it will stop to sell LoRaWAN kit from January 1, 2025, signaling the end-of an era for Cisco’s low power, long range connectivity kit. Future sales of TuffTors will stop, but TuffTors will continue to support existing customers with active service contracts.
In the considerations of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) refers to a protocol for the remote communication of low power devices. This allows for secure, reliable, low cost, low power consumption, and long battery life over vast areas of geographical coverage two-way data transmission.
Cisco said it expects its LoRaWAN shipments to end by April 1, 2025. Its final software maintenance release will be issued on January 1, 2026. Starting from this date, Cisco will not repair or maintain LoRaWAN product software.
Starting in 2029, these Cisco LoRaWAN products will officially be classified as 'obsolete'; and in 2023, will be the last date customers receive service and support on these products under active service contracts or warranty conditions.
There is no direct replacement for Cisco's LoRaWAN product line at this time. But customers have options when it comes to the Cisco Technology Migration Program (TMP), where eligible customers can trade in equipment and get credit toward new Cisco gear.
The Cisco Refurbished Equipment program is available for those who want to purchase LoRaWAN products to continue until January 2029, giving businesses seeking these connectivity solutions other options.
Cisco’s decision reflects broader movements in IoT technology and connectivity as companies continue to press for more sophisticated solutions as needs change.
