In order to give its cloud business a big boost, Google has acquired Cask Data, a startup based in Palo Alto. Cask Data specializes in big data analytics solutions that are based on Hadoop. The financial details of the deal haven’t been disclosed yet. But it has been confirmed that Cask Data will continue supporting its existing customers and products.
Also, Cask Data’s star product CDAP will be kept open, Google has promised. “We will continue to develop and release open source Cask Data Application Platform (CDAP) that makes building and running big data solutions easy for enterprise customers,” said the founders of Cask Data in a blog post.
Big Data drive
Google intends to add more tools similar to the ones developed by Cask Data. Google also plans to pick up more customers and revenue for further expansion through acquisitions. In fact, this is the second acquisition that Google has made in less than a week, where it recently acquired Velostrata that provides solutions to business that wish to migrate and run data, apps and other IT functions in the cloud and across hybrid environments. When compared with other cloud service providers, Google Cloud is lagging behind in terms of customers, usage, and revenue. These acquisitions are hopefully going to give Google the push it needs.
