President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has signed a decree approving the State Program for the comprehensive development of biotechnology in Turkmenistan from 2024 to 2028. This ambitious initiative aims to drive priority innovation and investment projects, significantly expanding production across the bio-industry spectrum, including bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-chips.

The State Program adopts a multifaceted strategy, leveraging the nation’s scientific capabilities to explore diverse areas of biotechnology. The Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan is at the forefront of research, delving into fields such as bio-pharmaceuticals, where there is a strong focus on the medicinal properties of local flora. Additionally, efforts in food biotechnology are geared towards enhancing the nutritional value of foods and beverages, while agricultural biotechnology aims to improve crop yields.

Turkmen scientists are making significant strides in pioneering biosensors, bio-chips for personalized medicine, and research into biofuels and biodegradable materials. Studies on microorganisms for soil bio-remediation highlight Turkmenistan's growing expertise in biotechnology, attracting global scientific interest.

The presidential decree outlines a comprehensive plan of action, to be led by the Academy of Sciences in collaboration with relevant ministries and departments. The primary objective is to integrate scientific advancements into various economic sectors, fostering the production of eco-friendly, energy-efficient, import-substituting, and export-oriented goods. This initiative aspires to establish a competitive national bio-industry sector, positioning Turkmenistan for success on the global stage.
