Naval Innovation, US Navy’s New Blockchain System PARANOID to Revolutionize Software Security
In a groundbreaking move, the United States Navy has unveiled its proprietary blockchain technology, known as "PARANOID" (Powerful Authentication Regime Applicable to Naval Operational Flight Program Integrated Development), to the private sector. The Navy is seeking partners for a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to advance this cutting-edge security solution.
Developed by the Naval Air Warfare Center’s Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) in Lakehurst, New Jersey, PARANOID aims to secure software against cyberattacks throughout its development and deployment phases. This blockchain-based system verifies files across multiple nodes at every step of the development process, creating an immutable ledger of developer activity. This ensures that any unauthorized attempts to edit, replace, or delete code are immediately detected and thwarted.
TechLink, the U.S. Department of Defense’s technology transfer partner, has highlighted the potential of PARANOID beyond military applications. The system’s robust security features make it ideal for any software development project where security is paramount. Nida Shaikh, a senior technology manager at TechLink, emphasized the importance of finding a CRADA partner interested in securing software supply chains. The Navy seeks companies willing to install, test, and provide feedback on PARANOID to enhance its scalability and effectiveness.
This initiative marks the Navy's first commercialized blockchain invention, although the U.S. military has previously explored blockchain technology. Both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy have partnered with SIMBA Chain, a blockchain-based data exchange incubated at Notre Dame, to secure their supply lines.
As the Navy opens the doors to private sector collaboration, PARANOID represents a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against cyber threats, promising to bolster software security across various industries.
