Climate tech, the next big thing

Clean energy jobs have grown by 10% in the past two years, outpacing the economy as a whole.

In recent years, especially in 2023, layoffs have become increasingly common. Companies, both small and large alike, shed over 240,000 jobs in the last year. While the trend cooled off as we approached the end of the year, it hasn’t completely stopped, with 7,000 jobs cut in the month of November alone. But as the proverb says, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. In recent years, climate tech has become a hot topic, providing endless job opportunities. The sector has been hiring, and 2024 looks no different, as the trend seems only to grow.

According to recent reports published by the industry group E2, clean energy jobs have grown by 10% in the past two years, outpacing the economy as a whole. It is believed that by 2032, when the Inflation Reduction Act is set to expire, the fastest-growing job fields will include wind turbine technician (45% growth) and solar photovoltaic installer (22% growth), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For individuals displaced from the general tech sector, climate tech appears to be an attractive alternative, and this is indeed proving true for many. Investors are expressing significant interest in this sector, allocating substantial investments to it. It is opportune for tech-oriented individuals to acquire some knowledge in climate or energy, enabling them to transition into the burgeoning climate tech sector.
