Finland’s costly and long-delayed new nuclear reactor goes online

Finland’s costly and long-delayed new nuclear reactor went online amid expectations that it will boost the Scandinavian country’s electricity self-sufficiency and help achieve its net carbon zero targets.

The much-delayed Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor became the first European nuclear power plant to open in the past 15 years and started test production to deliver power to Finland’s national grid. Over time, the Olkiluoto nuclear reactor’s electricity production is expected to reduce Finland’s need for electricity imports and lead to lower power prices.

The power production at the nuclear reactor comes amid growing fears of a European energy war after Russia threatened to close a major gas pipeline to Germany if European nations ban Russian oil imports.

Olkiluoto 3, Finland’s first new nuclear power plant in four decades, had been due to start operations in 2009 but was plagued by technological drawbacks that became the subject of lawsuits.

The nuclear plant started test production at just over 0.1 GW (gigawatt), a small fraction of its total capacity. The increase to full, stable electricity output is planned to start by the end of July 2022.

The Nordic nation’s net electricity imports averaged 13 terawatt-hours (TWh) over the last few years, which is expected to decrease to 5-8 TWh by 2025 with the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear plant in operation.
