Tech Giant Amazon to Boost German Economy with Major Investments and Thousands of New Jobs
Amazon has announced a groundbreaking investment of $11 billion in Germany, aimed at expanding its cloud and logistics operations across the country. This significant financial commitment underscores Amazon's dedication to driving innovation and economic growth in the region.
As part of this investment, Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to inject €8.8 billion into its cloud infrastructure by 2026. This effort will focus on building, maintaining, and operating its cloud infrastructure in the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, which has been based in the Frankfurt Rhein-Main area since 2014. The investment aims to meet the surging demand for AWS technologies in Germany, including advancements in artificial intelligence.
In addition to the cloud expansion, Amazon has outlined a €10 billion plan to enhance its logistics network across Germany. This expansion will see the creation of 4,000 new jobs in 2024, with new fulfillment centers opening in Horn-Bad Meinberg (North Rhine-Westphalia) in late summer, Erfurt (Thuringia) in May, and Großenkneten in August 2023. These new roles will increase Amazon's permanent workforce in Germany to over 40,000 employees by the end of the year, offering opportunities across various levels and sectors in more than 100 cities and municipalities.
Further strengthening its cloud capabilities, Amazon recently announced a €7.8 billion investment in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This new, independent cloud for Europe will launch its first AWS Region in the State of Brandenburg by the end of 2025.
