Boosting Spain’s Digital Future, Microsoft Launches New Cloud Data Centers in Madrid
Microsoft has made a significant stride in its global expansion by opening its first cloud region of data centers in Spain, all situated in the Community of Madrid. This new region, named Spain Central, is part of Microsoft’s $2.1 billion investment in the country over the next two years.
The Madrid-based data centers, constructed by Ferrovial, will deliver advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services to businesses and public institutions throughout Spain. This initiative is anticipated to inject $10.7 billion into the national GDP and create approximately 77,000 jobs between 2024 and 2030, according to IDC.
Spain Central will provide a range of services including productivity tools, data analytics, cybersecurity, computing, and storage solutions through platforms like Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and generative AI.
Prominent clients already on board with the new cloud region include major financial institutions like Abanca, Banc Sabadell, Banco Santander, Bankinter, BBVA, and CaixaBank. Microsoft’s strategic partners such as Accenture, Capgemini, DXC Technology, Fujitsu, and Telefónica Tech are also supporting the digital transformation efforts of Spanish organizations, helping them transition to the new Spain Central data center region.
Microsoft’s move comes as other tech giants have also established a presence in Spain. Google opened a cloud region in Madrid in May 2022, and Amazon launched an AWS cloud region in Aragon later that year. Oracle opened a Madrid region in September, with plans for a second one underway, both developed in partnership with Telefónica.
