Police are conducting an investigation into the drugging and robbery of a US crypto investor, who lost $120,000 after entering a fictitious Uber in London.
Armed kidnappers in London abducted an American crypto investor after he stepped into a fake Uber. Jacob Irwin-Cline, a Portland, Oregon resident, revealed what it’s like when crypto holders face real risks.
May 9 saw the incident take place, following a night out in Soho. Irwin-Cline thought he was getting into his Uber, but the driver was not who he appeared to be. Later, it was believed that what was in the cigarette the man offered was scopolamine or so-called “Devil’s Breath.” Due to the drug, Irwin-Cline unintentionally revealed his crypto wallets when he handed over his phone.
Once he came to, thanks to a kind stranger he got back to his hostel after being abandoned. A friend in the U.S. assisted him in examining his crypto accounts, revealing the theft of nearly all his funds. The stolen crypto was traced through MEXC and BTSE, but recovery is unlikely due to the confusing transfers.
Authorities confirmed they are looking into the case, but no arrests have taken place yet. Irwin-Cline stated he is happy to be safe, even with the loss and encourages people to remain watchful. This case strongly highlights the risks that crypto investors face in the digital world and the real world.
