Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is offering to sell his very first tweet as a non-fungible token (NFT). He shared a link Friday afternoon to a platform called "Valuables," where his March 21, 2006 tweet "just setting up my twttr" was up for bidding. Although this tweet has been publicly available as a free digital item for nearly 15 years, Dorsey is now selling it as an NFT, or "non-fungible token. According to the website, the highest offer is from Sina Estavi, CEO of Bridge Oracle, for $2.5 million, until today.
Crypto collectibles, also known as Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs), are becoming popular lately. It is gaining momentum as it provides digital proof of ownership of a virtual item. These assets' ownership is recorded on a blockchain - a digital ledger similar to the networks that underpin bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, unlike most currencies, NFTs can't be exchanged for any other asset. Each NFT is unique and can't be duplicated. In other words, it can be described as a digital autograph.
The tweet will continue to live on the internet for as long as Dorsey, and Twitter the company, choose to keep it up. Dorsey has been vocal about the adoption of cryptocurrencies and mentions #bitcoin on his bio. His digital payments company, Square has recently purchased 3,318 bitcoins last month, after an earlier buying of 4,709 bitcoin in October last year.
