Aston Martin F1 Partners with NetApp to Boost Data Strategy and Sustainability

Aston Martin F1 uses NetApp to boost data management and sustainability, integrating cutting edge technology to supercharge its performance while setting its emissions net zero goals for 2030.

In a bid to balance competitive performance and sustainability, Aston Martin F1 has entered into a strategic collaboration with NetApp in a novel way of managing data. It is easy to see in the context of Formula 1 that success relies on data, not simply on race day but on the practice and simulations leading up to it.

“Without data, we cannot push the car or in fact even get it to move on the grid let alone the actual race,” said Brian Johnston, head of IT Trackside at Aston Martin F1. Clare Lansley, AMF1’s CIO, reiterates that the spoke team produces so much information that they cannot afford to waste it and have to organize it properly to gain a competitive edge.

NetApp technology combined with FlexPod and VMware is one such partnership that provides a bore load of management and better organization of data. AMF1 has recalled to the grid in 2021, each car is fitted with no less than 300 sensors which feed the core data chain critical metadata about weather, timing and driver activity.

Besides performance enhancement, Aston Martin F1 is also pursuing sustainability with an ambition of attaining net zero by 2030. The team adopts a tiered storage architecture which features even offline storages in order to reduce energy expenditures as well as include green energy sources of supply; 1,936 solar panels for example, located in its Technology Campus.

NetApp forms the priority of sustainability goals cooperate with such partners as Lansley do. A partnership that saves energy but also helps them compete in racing is well-established evidence that technological integration with the environment is possible.
