Army units showcase improved dispersed communication capabilities at Fort Johnson, reflecting advancements in network modernization and operational flexibility.
FORT JOHNSON, La. — In a recent exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), the Army demonstrated significant advancements in communication capabilities that allow units to operate more dispersed and efficiently. Both the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division and the 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment utilized upgraded networking tools to enhance their operational effectiveness during the rotation.
This exercise highlighted the Army's ongoing efforts to modernize its tactical communications. The ability to fight in a more dispersed manner is crucial in modern combat, reflecting lessons learned from recent conflicts which emphasize speed and agility to evade enemy targeting. With the Army's focus shifting away from static command posts, new networking capabilities enable units to function with smaller, more mobile command structures.
The upgrades include innovations such as antenna farms, which support communication with reduced electromagnetic signatures and faster setup times. These developments have shrunk the size of command posts and improved the Army’s ability to maintain a lower profile on the battlefield.
Col. Matthew Hardman, commander of the operations group at JRTC, praised the integration of app-based systems and a common operating picture that facilitates seamless information flow. Meanwhile, the integration of HMS manpack radios into aerial platforms allowed continuous voice and data communication over a 500-mile air assault from Fort Campbell, KY to Fort Johnson.
Additionally, the Army is focusing on reducing data classification to speed up information sharing and enhance coalition interoperability. The shift towards unclassified-encrypted communications promises to improve operational efficiency and collaboration with international partners.
