Germany to buy 35 Lockheed F-35 fighter jets

Germany intends to buy up to 35 F-35 fighter jets built by U.S aerospace firm Lockheed Martin to replace its aging Panavia Tornado fleet.

In early February, a German defense source reported that Germany was leaning towards buying Lockheed Martin’s F-35, but a final decision hadn’t been taken.

German Air Force’s Tornado is the only German jet capable of carrying American nuclear bombs stored in the country in case of a conflict. The German Air Force has been operating the Tornado jet since the 1980s. However, the European nation plans to phase it out between 2025 and 2030.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 stealth fighter jets are some of the most technologically advanced combat aircraft globally, and their unique shape and special coating make detecting them incredibly difficult.

Germany also plans to purchase Eurofighter jets, made by a consortium including Airbus, and would be used in electronic warfare and escort operations.

After announcing an upsurge in military spending, Chancellor Scholz said that the German army would receive €100 billion ($113 billion) for armaments projects and investments.

The F-35 purchase will be a blow for Boeing, as the former German defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer favored the firm’s F-18 fighter pilot.
