GM Altium battery tech to power future military platforms in a new collaborative effort
GM Defense, a division of General Motors, is partnering with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) to bring advanced electric battery technology to the U.S. military.
The Ultium Platform is GM’s latest and most advanced battery technology, designed to deliver more power, range, and flexibility than any previous system. It can adapt to different needs and new technologies, making it suitable for a variety of military applications. This project will test the efficacy of this battery under the demanding conditions of military operations.
Steve duMont, president of GM Defense, is excited about the collaboration: "The Defense Department will benefit from a multibillion-dollar investment by GM to develop and build battery technology that transforms and helps us transition to global defense and government customers."
David Wetz, professor of electrical engineering at UTA and director of PPEL, said: "We are excited to work with GM Defense to test the Ultium Platform to determine its potential use in future warfare."
