Foxconn has great ambitions for the automotive business, as it aims to diversify its portfolio from phones, laptops, and other consumer electronics.
Famous iPhone assembler and consumer-electronics maker Foxconn is now entering into EV business. The Taiwanese conglomerate revealed its three electric vehicles — an SUV called the Model C, a sedan called Model E, and an electric bus named the Model T, under its new “Foxtron” branding. However, Foxconn isn’t planning to make these specific vehicles itself. Instead, it is just developing them as a prototype design to be used for reference. Interestingly, Foxconn didn’t even build the prototypes, and they were made by another Taiwanese automaker Yulun Motor.
EV business is still a new business, with traditional automakers transitioning towards it. Foxconn said the Model E sedan could travel 750 kilometers (about 466 miles) on a single charge and achieve a speed of 100 km/hr under three seconds, while the Model C SUV tops out at 700km (435 miles). Foxconn says the Model T bus has already gone through hundreds of thousands of kilometers in testing.
Foxconn has great ambitions for the automotive business, as it aims to diversify its portfolio from phones, laptops, and other consumer electronics. Foxconn chairman Young Liu acknowledged the challenge in the EV sector, saying, “Our biggest challenge is we don’t know how to make cars.” However, he is ambitious for the future and wants to have Foxconn’s tech inside five percent of all-electric vehicles made by 2025. Apart from this, Foxconn also has investments in several automakers, supply chain companies, and electric vehicle startups.
