Tesla is working on Elon Musk’s dream to produce a $25,000 electric car. According to him, the new “tables” battery cells along with changing materials inside the cell will allow Tesla to reduce the overall cost by half, per kilowatt-hour. This technology would make the upfront cost of Tesla vehicles the same as the traditional cars with petrol or diesel counterparts. Also, the electric car's cost of running per kilometer is far less than diesel or petrol ones. This would make Tesla an even more affordable and better choice for the masses.
The price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) has been falling over the last decade, from $1,100/kWh in 2010 to $156/kWh in 2019, a drop of 87 percent. Experts predict that the price will hit $100/kWh by 2023, but Musk is even more enthusiastic about it, predicting an even cheaper price target.
Apart from the expensive cells in a battery, the batter also contains additional components such as battery management and cooling systems that could cost $125–$130/kWh or more. He first promised a $25,000 EV back in 2018, which he said was possible within three years.
“I think in order for us to get up to a 25,000 car, that’s something we can do. But if we work really hard I think maybe we can do that in about three years,” Musk said in an interview with You Tuber Marques Brownlee.
