A state of emergency was declared by city officials of Alaska after a glacier lake had an outburst causing major flooding and damage to the city nearby.
Juneau, Alaska, city officials have declared an emergency as a glacier lake outburst flood causes havoc close to the city, where buildings have been destroyed.
The Mendenhall Glacier's Suicide Basin broke, causing flooding. According to experts, when a dam holding back a glacial lake falls, a flood results from the glacial lake's outburst.
The National Weather Service reports that several buildings along the Mendenhall River have been destroyed by flooding. According to Juneau's deputy city manager, Rob Barr, two homes have already been lost, and another has been slightly damaged and washed away.
The NWS reported that there are currently trees and other debris all over the river and that the flooding is an "extreme" event.
According to the FEMA scale, according to Aaron Jacobs of the National Weather Service in Juneau, there was no more than a 1% possibility of that level of flooding happening.
Sam Nolan, a local, recorded video of the collapse of a multi-story building into the river. According to Nolan, he watched as the house was submerged by floodwaters for more than an hour. Residents also recorded videos of floating debris and trees in the Mendenhall River near the Juneau International Airport.
According to the city of Juneau, the flooding has forced the closure of a number of local roads and bridges. Residents were advised to avoid the river while the flood event was occurring by city emergency operations.
