Starbucks takes a step towards sustainability and clean energy

Starbucks is launching a lab in its agronomy headquarters in Costa Rica for sustainability research and innovation.

Starbucks announced that it is launching a lab in Costa Rica, their agronomy headquarters, for virtual, hands-on learning opportunities for not only Starbucks employees but also students, researchers, and industry leaders. The lab being launched is set to be for sustainability research and innovation.

Hacienda Alsacia is the first and only coffee farm of the company, and the lab that is located at the farm is hoping to deal with some of the largest environmental challenges along with major social issues like agricultural economics, climate change, and adaptation.

Starbucks hopes that the project will be finalized and the lab will open physically in the next three years. The company, however, still plans to hold educational training at the field this fall, offering the program through their partnership with Arizona State University (ASU). A few selected students at ASU, along with a selected group of Starbucks partners, will be allowed to attend the first round of training.

The idea behind opening the lab is to improve the company’s stand on sustainability. The company has been taking a few steps towards clean energy with the goal of reaching 100%; the company currently operates 66% of its stores with clean energy. The company also stated that by 2023, it has long-term plans to produce carbon-neutral coffee.
