Tesla is expanding its open Supercharger pilot program in Europe that lets non-Tesla EV owners use the company’s extensive charging network.
Earlier, the pilot was limited to select stations in France, Norway, and the Netherlands. The service is also available in Austria, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.
Non-Tesla owners in both Germany and Belgium initially could only use Tesla’s network if traveling to a country that is part of the Supercharger pilot program. With Belgium a part of the program, German residents cannot domestically use the superchargers.
Elon Musk, the Chief Executive of the EV maker, has been talking about extending the program to the US since 2021 but didn’t provide specifics on how it will be implemented due to the prominence of Tesla’s proprietary chart port used all over North America. But last week, in an interview with Financial Times, Musk said that Tesla is planning to add standardized connectors for other EVs to Supercharger stations in the US.
If you live in one of the pilot countries, you can take advantage of the Tesla network and find participating stations by using the Tesla app. If you own both a non-Tesla EV and a Tesla EV, you can monitor Supercharging for both vehicles in the app. Non-Tesla EVs might incur additional fees on top of the electricity rates that are shared in the app.
