European Union flags 400 Indian Food Products

European Union Raises Alarms as Cadmium, Pesticides, and Fungus Taint Export-Quality Foods from India.

In a startling revelation, the European Union has raised serious concerns over the safety of over 400 Indian food products, citing contamination with cancer-causing agents. The report, highlighted by Deccan Herald, underscores a troubling trend in the food industry, raising questions about the safety and quality of commonly consumed items.

The EU's warning comes after a meticulous examination of export-quality products from India between 2019 and 2024, revealing alarming levels of contamination. Among the flagged items are 14 products containing harmful elements like mercury and cadmium, known to inflict damage on various organs, including the kidneys and cardiovascular system.

Tricyclazole, a fungicide banned in the EU due to its carcinogenic and genotoxic properties, was detected in rice, herbs, and spices, emphasizing the urgent need for stringent quality control measures. Shockingly, more than 52 products were found to harbor multiple pesticides or fungicides, some containing up to five different chemicals.

Delving deeper into the analysis, the report exposes the presence of 2-chloroethanol, a toxic byproduct of ethylene oxide, in approximately 20 products. Additionally, ochratoxin A, a banned mycotoxin known for its harmful effects, was detected in 10 products, including common ingredients like chillies, coffee, and rice.

The implications of these findings are profound, signaling a pressing need for enhanced regulatory oversight and quality assurance mechanisms within the food industry. As consumers grapple with the repercussions of contaminated food products, there is an urgent call for action to safeguard public health and well-being.
