China will import 45 foreign video

The Chinese government agency in charge of video games gave publishing licenses to 45 foreign games that will be released in China. This is another step toward loosening the strict rules that have hurt the industry for the past 18 months.

According to a list made public by the regulator, the National Press and Publication Administration has given the go-ahead for the import of five online games that Tencent Holdings will be publishing, including "Pokémon Unite" by Nintendo and "Valorant" by Riot Games.

The regulator also gave the green light to 84 domestic games for the month of December, according to a separate list that came out on Wednesday.

The approval of imported games effectively concludes Beijing's crackdown on the video game industry, which began in August last year when regulators suspended the game approval process.

In April, regulators reinstituted the issuance of game licenses for domestically produced games, and the approval of foreign-made games was believed to be the final regulatory barrier to be eliminated.

In China, which has the biggest gaming market in the world, video games can't come out until they are approved by the government.

Beijing's one-year crackdown on the industry has been a big setback for Chinese tech companies like Tencent and NetEase Inc., which make a lot of money from publishing both homegrown and imported video games.
