Developer of Lara Croft Go, Square Enix Montreal, has been rebranded as Onoma following its acquisition by Embracer Group earlier in 2022.
A post on Onoma’s website explained that Onoma was Greek for name and the firm says names offer endless possibilities, symbolizing that video game players can be anyone, achieve anything, and go anywhere.
In the post Onoma also stated, as game makers, they were inventors of new worlds and new possibilities. The studio said names were the beginning of stories—of stories as individuals and as a community. According to Onoma, stories are invitations to other worlds where the impossible, the unknown, and the magical become reality.
The rebranded studio said at Onoma, the team comprised of creators, storytellers, and inventors and the ideas and experiences brought to life by the studio connect them to each other and video game players.
The rebrand marks the beginning of a new chapter for Onoma, which Embracer acquired from Square Enix alongside Eidos-Montreal and Crystal Dynamics back in August.
It’s not Embracer’s only revamping of the studio following its $300 million purchase of the three studios. The group is also eyeing new sequels, remasters, remakes, and spin-offs from the extensive library of games which includes Tomb Raider, Thief, and Deus Ex.
