The well-known video game developer Epic Games won the lawsuit it filed against Google in 2020. The jury rendered a unanimous verdict in the favor of Epic Games.
In 2020, Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that the latter had unfairly privileged their app store over competitors'. The store is used by hundreds of millions of consumers to download apps for cellphones running Google's Android operating system. Google declared that it would contest the result.
Nonetheless, Epic CEO Tim Sweeny expressed his satisfaction with the decision, writing, "Victory over Google!" in a post on X, the previous Twitter platform.
He stated that the court would begin deliberating on the compensation matter in January. In a trial that lasted more than a month, the attorneys representing the two firms presented their closing arguments on Monday. The jury rendered a unanimous verdict in Epic's favor on all charges.
Google is keeping up its defense of its economic model in spite of the court decision.
The complaint also contested Google's practice of charging Android app developers transaction fees of up to 30% and the way the tech behemoth integrates its Play Store and billing service so that developers must use both in order for their apps to be included in the store.
As a result, the decision may grant developers greater control over how their apps are shared and monetized. According to Google, its commissions are competitive in the industry and it offers extra benefits like malware prevention, reach, and transaction security.
