Pokemon GO maker Niantic acquires WebAR development firm 8th Wall

The augmented reality firm behind Pokemon GO, Niantic, is acquiring WebAR development firm 8th Wall, the company announced on Thursday.

The financial information of the deal were not disclosed. Niantic says the agreement is the company’s largest acquisition to date. The purchase of 8th Wall will help Niantic’s Lightship developer platform and help developers realize their AR visions in the real-world Metaverse.

Founded in 2016, 8th Wall currently supports many billions of devices globally, including 5 billion smartphones across Android and iOS and computers and AR/VR headsets, Niantic reported. 8th Wall’s platform has been used to create AR activations by various companies, including Microsoft, Netflix, Universal Pictures, and many more.

In a blog post about the acquisition, Erik Murphy-Chutorian, founder and CEO of 8th Wall, said that by joining Niantic, the firm would create more tools to build engaging AR experiences that will motivate people to discover new places.

Niantic’s purchase of 8th Wall comes after a few months after Niantic raised $300 million from Coatue, valuing the company at $9 billion. The AR firm plans to use the investment to build what it calls the ‘real-world Metaverse.’
