The Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, has acquired the developer of Octopath Traveler, Acquire, for an undisclosed amount.
According to Gamesindustry.biz, the Japanese conglomerate disclosed the acquisition in a quarterly earnings report that was released today.
With this acquisition, Acquire becomes a sister business to Spike Chunsoft and FromSoftware, among other companies. For those who don't know, FromSoftware is the company behind obscure titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and Dark Souls. Being the brains behind the Danganronpa and AI: The Somnium Files franchises, Spike Chunsoft is likewise no slouch.
Beyond Octopath Traveler and its follow-up, Acquire has created numerous other games, such as Akiba's Beat, Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed, and No Heroes Allowed VR. According to Kadokawa, the acquisition should enable the business to "create synergies" with its "current game-related subsidiaries." Though its meaning is unknown, we hope it alludes to a strange crossover between Octopath Traveler and Elden Ring.
Furthermore, Kadokawa claims that the change will improve its "line-up of console games." It is true that over three million copies of the first Octopath Traveler were sold, and in just three months, a million copies of the sequel were sold. That's a significant amount for a JRPG with traditional mechanics. Although the firm hasn't said if it will continue to work with Square Enix to publish Octopath games, those sales figures suggest it's a very safe bet.
