Hot on the heels of the fifth edition reboot of Spelljammer, the team at Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has revealed One D&D, marking the beginning of a “new generation of Dungeons & Dragons.”
WotC has been working on the next thing for D&D since last year, but details have been scant until now. The D&D creative team appeared in a short video during the recent Wizards Presents digital showcase alongside the upcoming Dragonlance revival and several MTG crossover events to explain their plan for the future of D&D.
Throughout the presentation, the team detailed the “three pillars” of this next phase of D&D, expected to launch in earnest in 2024. They include ongoing updates to the D&D rules, an expansion of D&D Beyond, and a set of digital tabletop tools for players and game masters (GMs) to use in their games online or at home.
Game Design Architect at D&D, Chris Perkins, said D&D did a smart thing in the fifth edition by listening to the fans. And what resulted from the process was a stable, well-loved, and a system that incorporated the best elements of earlier editions. Because of that, the game company was in the position where D&D was not an edition but just D&D.
