A firm that makes natural products for babies has recalled nearly 10,500 bottles and cups after learning children could be exposed to material containing lead if the base breaks off, the USA Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The commission said, Green Sprouts Inc. willingly recalled the goods after realizing that the base of some of its stainless-steel cups and bottles can break and expose soldering that contains lead. Lead is toxic if consumed by young children and can have adverse health effects.
According to the commission, Green Sprouts has received seven reports of incidents of the bottles’ bases breaking off. No injuries have been reported since the 23 November 2022 recall was issued.
In a statement on its website, Green Sprouts said it wasn’t aware that a component containing lead could become accessible in its stainless-steel sippy cups, sip-and-straw cups, and straw bottles.
The part of the cups with the solder dot containing lead wouldn’t normally be accessible, so it wasn’t tested by the safety lab hired to vet the products as part of the manufacturing process, the firm said.
The lids and sprouts of affected products are still usable with other Green Sprouts bottles and cups, the firm said.
