A robotic delivery startup, Refraction AI, plans to put robots in bike lanes and on the road ways. Last week, Refraction AI had unveiled its new autonomous delivery robot REV-1 at a TechCrunch event.
REV-1 is a lightweight robot and is fast enough to operate both on the road ways and in bike lanes. REV-1 is larger in comparison to most delivery robots and can drive on sidewalks. But these cost lesser and are smaller than autonomous delivery vans or shuttles.
The REV-1 is about the size of an electric bicycle. The robot is 5 feet tall, 30 inches wide and 4.5 feet long. It can reach up to a speed of 15 mph and weighs approximately 100 pounds. This robot also uses 12 cameras for its primary sensor system.
“We have created the Goldilocks of autonomous vehicles in terms of size and shape, Our platform is nimble, lightweight and fast enough to operate in the bike lane and on the roadway, and we are tackling regional inclement weather patterns that inhibit or slow down other AV solutions,” said Matthew Johnson Roberson, Refraction AI CEO and Co-Founder, a professor at University of Michigan.
“If this is a more efficient and city-friendly way of doing last-mile delivery, I’m all for figuring out how to make it work,” Johnson Roberson added.
