KAIST comes up with new tech in controlling Turtle moves through Human mind

Researchers never stops creating amazing things, recently researchers at  Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(KAIST) are headed to invent yet another new creation in the field of science-fiction by experimenting in ‘brain –computer interface(BCIs).

KAIST researchers developed a new technology that allows humans to take over or control turtles with their mind. This Tech ‘reads’ and uses man’s thought to control machines. This sends signals from brain to computer then from computers to brain - You might have been wondering how this will work? It’s very simple; have you heard of Humanoid Robots? – Yes! Then this new tech plays the same role.

Earlier, researchers applied invasive technique like inserting electrodes in animals brain-especially on birds. But now the new research has exhibited the combination of BCI with a device that transfers information from computer to brain- this is also referred as ‘computer to brain interface’ (CBI). This new tech works mainly to establish functional link between brains on different living organism. Now, (KAIST) researchers have created a human-turtle interaction system through which signals are originated from human brain which affects on turtle movements.

Korea Advanced Institute of science and technology is led by Phill-Seung Lee of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Sungho Jo of the Computing School, KAIST institute main aim is to guide the animal’s movements and to control its behavior. Why they choose Turtle, because of its high cognitive capacity in finding differentiation between wavelengths of light and instinctual escape behaviors.

The Human-Turtle set up has designed with a head-mounted display (HMD) connected with a BCI to submerge the human user in the turtle’s environment. The operator wears the BCI-HMD system, whereas the turtle has a 'cyborg system' that consists of a camera, Wi-Fi transceiver, computer control module, and battery. All are well placed on the turtle’s upper shell; apart from these equipments - it also includes a black semi-cylinder with a slit on turtle shell, which forms the ‘stimulation device.’

Human Operator can guide the turtle moves by watching feed from camera fixed on Turtle, all directions are followed by turtle as per the instructions given by the operator.

The main purpose of researchers to develop this technology is to improve positions and augmented and virtual reality techniques, enabling various applications, including devices for military reconnaissance and surveillance.
