Hermès Defends Birkin Bags as 'Costly,' Not Expensive

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Hermès artistic director, defends Birkin bags as 'costly' for its craftsmanship and exclusivity, as well as the way in which Hermès is committed to quality in fashion & lifestyle.

Unlike most people, the artistic director of Hermès, Pierre-Alexis Dumas, has recently qualified his statement regarding the Birkin bags-could cost $9,000 and sometimes go to hundreds-thousands at auctions-not being expensive but "costly." According to Dumas, the term "costly" refers to the price that goes with the quality of craftsmanship, while "expensive" means it does not meet client credibility. This is why, according to him, an Hermès client has to wait for years to get his desired bag.

Satisfaction with Birkins is elusive despite their high price. These coveted bags are rarely available in Hermès stores, and cannot be purchased online. There is an intricate appointment system that people have to work their way through just to get a chance to buy, then it’s a long wait. As Dumas points out, Hermès pledges to the authentically exclusive and away from artificial scarcity by way of craftsmanship.

Hermès is unlike the fast paced world in which we live; the bags are still handcrafting, with one artisan working on one bag and at least 20 hours of incredible detail. Despite an increase in production, Hermès stands firm in its artisanal methods, ensuring the quality that underpins the desirability of their products.

Part of the quest toward quality was for Hermès to establish a leather-work training center, inaugurated in 2021, which will spout 400 artisans a year into the skilled craftsmen souk. Thus, it customarily assures the supply of competent craftsmiths for the future while extending the Fashion & Lifestyle legacy of Hermès for timeless, well-crafted luxury.
