IGNOU Launches Certificate Programme in Fashion Design

New Certificate Programme Aims to Equip Aspiring Designers with Essential Skills and Knowledge for the Fashion Industry

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced the opening of applications for its new certificate programme in Fashion Design, offered through the School of Vocational Education and Training. This innovative programme is designed to meet the needs of individuals aspiring to become assistant designers in the retail or export sectors, budding entrepreneurs, or those looking to update their existing skills in pattern making and sewing.

A recent media release from IGNOU highlights the programme’s goal of preparing students for employability within the textile industry. The comprehensive curriculum, priced at Rs. 5000 for the entire course, promises to deliver a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for success in the dynamic fashion world.

The Government of India has set ambitious targets to achieve US $300 billion in textile exports by 2024-25 and to create an additional 35 million jobs within the textile sector. To support these objectives, IGNOU emphasizes the necessity of adopting exceptional pedagogical approaches, including blended learning tailored to industry needs.

According to IGNOU, the certificate programme aims to develop a foundational understanding of fashion design, provide insights into the fashion industry both in India and globally, and impart essential knowledge of textiles. Additionally, the programme focuses on equipping students with skills in digital technology, particularly in CAD, and enhancing their pattern making and sewing techniques. It also emphasizes the development of entrepreneurship and communication skills, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for various career paths within the fashion industry.
