Recently, CIO Bulletin spoke to Aria Irani, CEO of Airport Van Rental on the qualities it takes to be a top CEO. These are excerpts from the conversation that ensued

Q. When did Airport Van Rental begin? How has the business evolved over time?

AVR Van Rental was founded in 2007. At our core, we have always aimed to disrupt pricing for retail passenger van rentals. The more efficiency we create, the more cost savings we can pass on to our customers. We have internally developed a range of applications for our tech stack focused on driving a better customer experience and lower operational costs. Going forward, we will continue to lean on technology to disrupt our space, with the ultimate goal of transforming the cost of a family vacation.

Q. What are the company's core values, and what does the company want to accomplish?

Q. What role does the CEO play in the company's success, in your opinion?

My role is to find people smarter than me and support them. I’m fortunate to have developed a team of incredibly talented experts. I understand my responsibilities are to challenge them and enable them to achieve the goals we as a group have established.

Q. How much are you, as CEO, involved in the day-to-day activities of the business, or do you prefer to focus on its long-term goals?

Running a company out of COVID requires a tremendous amount of focus and discipline. For the past three years, I’ve been very involved in the day-to-day. As we continue to build on our success and momentum builds, I will shift more time to focusing on long term strategic goals around technology and capital. I love what we give our customers, and I never want to be too far away from the core business because that’s what gives me my inspiration.

Q. "Good habits always begin at the top." How accurate do you believe this to be? What practices within the company are you in charge of?

I absolutely agree with it! I expect my executives to behave with a high level of professionalism in front of their staff and our customers. I focus on how I speak and behave in front of my team because this expectation must start with me. I also believe we must track everything possible in a business. I love the quote by Edward Deming that “Statistics and data are the language of business”. I turn everything I can into a trackable metric and measure with a consistent cadence. I expect my executives to do the same.

Q. Do you spend the time necessary to develop internal talent? Are there any examples of the same that you could provide?

Yes, we do; six of our seven executive leaders started with the company in a different role. 85% of our location management started as individual contributors at those locations.

Q. What future plans does Airport Van Rental have?

We will continue to be the dominant brand in our space. We have a plan to expand to 10 new cities in the next 24 months. We will also be expanding our contactless rental software internally and to partners via subscription.

Aria Irani is the CEO of AVR Van Rental. Aria has demonstrated a remarkable ability to lead the company through challenging times, including successfully navigating the company through the turbulence of COVID-19.

Before joining AVR, Aria spent several years leading product development and implementation in the finance and HCM software spaces. Aria also has a background in engineering, having worked in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, providing Aria with a unique perspective on the importance of efficiency and process optimization.

Sam Zubedi is the Director of Technology and Revenue. He started with AVR in the San Francisco office but rose the ranks quickly. He is an incredible problem solver and has spearheaded the transformation of the organization to be a leader in AVR with technology. He has led the development of AVR’s contactless rental application and brought it to market.
