American Battery Solutions is a team of battery system experts

The use of lithium-ion batteries has grown significantly in recent years. They offer some distinct advantages and improvements over other forms of battery technology including nickel metal hydride, and lead acid batteries. With this growth in new applications and markets, managing the safety and performance of a lithium-ion battery is of paramount concern. To achieve these features, safety, performance, robustness, and cost competitiveness requires a deep understanding of the technology and a team that is experienced.

American Battery Solutions (ABS) brings together a team of battery system experts with decades of experience in designing, developing, and manufacturing advanced battery systems for the transportation industry. Collectively, it has helped launch some of the industry’s most well-known programs with OEM customers such as General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, BMW, Daimler-Mercedes and others.

In conversation with Subhash Dhar, Founder, Chairman and CEO

Q. What are some of the programs you have launched for the transportation industry?

Some of the programs we have launched include partnerships with our blue chip customers in the field of transportation, industrial and stationary energy storage systems. In January our partner Intimidator began production of their new eNVy, neighborhood electric vehicle powered by the ABS Alliance Intelligent Battery Series™. We also recently announced a partnership with Twin Vee, a manufacturer of electric boats, who will begin production of a new boat powered by the ABS ProLiance Intelligent Battery Series™ in late 2022. Additionally, we are working closely with other OEM partners to develop custom solutions for their commercial vehicle applications. American Battery Solutions anticipates being able to announce several major projects in the first half of 2022.

Q. How has your team supported you in reaching so far?

ABS has grown our team to nearly 200 members over the past 3 years, including more than 140 engineering focused on development of custom and standardized products. We have expanded our testing labs, added two prototype manufacturing lines, installed our first production line and are preparing to install our second production line in 2022. Our team has been instrumental in making these things happen by following our core company values. We work together to find solutions to problems and recognize our team members contributions to our collective initiatives and goals.

Q. Shed light on your high-quality lithium-Ion batteries?

ABS has launched our Alliance Intelligent Battery Series™ family of 24V and 48V, 2kWh and 3kWh modules for industrial vehicles, light electric, and golf cars. These are developed as “off-the-shelf” solutions that can quickly be integrated into a wide variety of applications. These solutions integrate advanced safety features to protect the cells even in these industrial applications. The Industrial series of 3kWh batteries is in a standard GC2 lead acid form factor and more importantly it offers nearly 2x the energy of similar products on the market and can often replace two or more of our competitor’s batteries. These batteries are also easily scalable in parallel up to ten batteries per installation approaching 30-40kWh, making them a great solution for OEMs with more than one vehicle they need to support.

In 2022 ABS will launch the first of our Proliance family of batteries beginning with a 350V 50kWh pack for commercial vehicles. Proliance is a designed to be an “off-the-shelf” family of batteries that are designed to automotive safety, performance, quality, and manufacturing standards. They range from a 350V 50kWh and a 100kWh pack for light and medium duty commercial vehicles to a 665V 110kWh battery for use in medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses and other commercial vehicles. These batteries will offer a high energy density solution in a standardized pack that is fully integrated with BMS, electronics and thermal management system.

Q. How has your partnership with leading cell supplier helped offer ultra fast charge combined with “state-of-the-art” BMS optimized for specific voltage levels?

ABS has partnered with a variety of cell suppliers that offer different technology solutions including both fast charge and high energy density. We have done significant testing on these batteries which has facilitated our BMS development. We have also installed hardware in the loop lab which allows for quick turn software development for different chemistry usage.

Q. What are the perks of using high energy technology?

American Battery Solutions has partnered with world-class cell suppliers to offer world-class energy density and ultra-fast charge combined with “state-of-the-art” BMS systems. With our class-leading energy density, our products offer our customers extended range in a small lightweight package. Available in E-series, I-Series and high-voltage systems. This enables our products to offer lightweight, lowest volume packaging, which in turn provides longer range and run time. In short, high-energy density equals longer range.

 Q. Tell us something about your engineering and product development?

We engineer, develop, and manufacture high-quality lithium-ion batteries and battery systems to serve the growing demands in electric vehicles (EV), electrified transportation, motive, industrial, and commercial markets. We do so with our automotive quality DNA and with the power of our experience; and we are an industrial and commercial electric vehicle battery manufacturer right here in the USA. Based on our automotive experience we apply a standardized stage gate process to help us manage the development and execution of new programs.

The man behind the success of ABS

Subhash Dhar is the Founder, Chairman and CEO, of American Battery Solutions Inc; a company engaged in developing, designing, and manufacturing complete Li-Ion battery systems for the electrification of vehicles, industrial equipment, and the fast-growing stationery storage applications.

Mr. Dhar’s journey in the field of electrochemistry and batteries started in 1981 with pioneering work in Nickel-Metal Hydride technology which was launched in GM’s first electric car the EV1 in 1994. This technology later became the enabling battery for Toyota’s Prius in 1997. Mr. Dhar was the founding President of ECD-Ovonic Battery Company during, where he developed and commercialized Nickel Metal hydride batteries for the electrification of vehicles and setup business alliances and manufacturing operations in the US, Japan, China, and Europe.

Mr. Dhar has also served at various technology and manufacturing companies in the following capacities. As Vice-Chairman of EnerDel, President of its parent company Ener1 Inc was CEO of Eletra Hybrid Bus; a company based in Brazil and was CEO of PlasmaDrive, a Seattle based company engaged in the development of a novel combustion technology.

He has a master’s in engineering management and Chemical Engineering from University of Detroit and Institute of Technology, India.

Was recently award the lifetime achievement award from NAATBatt.
